We were able to find the reports of 1893 after reading the following statement by Thomas Bennett on Maine Running History on facebook:
In 1892, Dr. George L. Meylan of Casco, a retired Columbia University medical director and professor of physical education, organized a relay race in which runners ran approximately five miles each in carrying a letter from the mayor of Bangor to the mayor of Portland. The start was at 5 a.m., and based on a projected average pace of 7 minutes 30 seconds per miles, the last runner should have arrived in Portland at 10:10 p.m., but in fact got in 20 minutes late. The following year, the event was repeated as a double relay, with runners travelling from Bangor to Portland, and bicyclists completing 15-mile legs in going from Portland to Bangor and back to Portland. The cycling team got back to Portland 40 minutes ahead of the running team.
