    John Mills states:
Walter was a wonderful man. His support for the race and his sons’ support since his passing has been a blessing to the race and the runners over many years. A great event! On my list to be done each year.

    Randy Hunt states:
Walter was my father. My brothers and I have participated in the race since 1995. My father was a VP at Dead River Company, and was with the company for almost 30 years. Dave Torrey was the race director for many years, and every year he would meet with my father to confirm that Dead River wanted to continue sponsoring the race. My father passed away in Jan 1995 while playing noontime pickup basketball at the YMCA — something he did a few days a week. I suspect Dave made the pitch to Sub5 to name the race after my father. My dad was no runner; but was a caring and kind businessman who was well-respected in the community, and I think that’s why Dave pursued the idea. This Friday (2/26/21) is my 25th anniversary at Dead River Company. I’m not a VP like my dad was, though. ? Thanks for asking about him. This photo of my dad and I was taken in the summer of 1994, mere months before we lost him.
