KITTERY, Maine — Nearly 150 runners came out in support of the Kittery Fire Department Association and in honor of the memory of former fire chief James Melhorn on Sunday.

Kittery Fire Department Association 5K Run/Walk race director Dr. Dan Hale, who is a local pediatrician and firefighter, said that he was very pleased with the turnout.

“We were hoping for 100 people and there were 145 runners and walkers here today,” Hale said. “This was a great show of support from a great community.”

The road race served many purposes for the Kittery Fire Department Association. It served as a “thank you” to voters who approved the town’s new fire station, as well as serving for the memorial to Melhorn. Melhorn, patriarch of a family that has had several members serve on the Kittery Fire Department, passed away earlier this year and Hale said he was glad to have the chance to memorialize Melhorn with the race.

“The community has said ‘thank you’ by showing up today, and we want to give a little bit back by helping them stay in good health with the run,” Hale said. “It’s something we want to do every year now, and we want it to keep growing each year.”

If the first year is any indication, the event will be a successful one in years to come.

Lewis Chamberlain of Eliot, Maine, was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 19 minutes, 13 seconds, followed by Nicholas Machienzi of Woburn, Mass., who finished in 19:51. Third place overall went to Kittery’s Scott Mangiafico, who finished in 19:58.

Deb Lindquist, another Kittery resident, was the top female finisher with a time of 20:36. Persephone Jones of Brookline, Mass. (22:21) and Ella Richardson of Eliot (22:36) finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s field.

“I’m here to support the Fire Department,” Lindquist said. “I did a 12K race yesterday, so this was hard. But, I wanted to do it to show support for the department, and it was a nice race. I wasn’t sure how they were going to deal with the bypass here, but they did a nice job of setting it up and it was a good race. The course was well marked …; It was good.”

Hale, who also ran in the race, said that although the weather wasn’t perfect, the cool, moist air was good to run in, and he said that he believed Melhorn was looking down on the race and helped to hold back the rain until after the race had completed.

“We’ve been praying that the weather would hold off, and I think Jim Melhorn was looking down on us today,” he said.

Chamberlain also said he really enjoyed being able to help the fire department while doing something he loves.

“This was a nice way to start the (race) season,” Chamberlain said. “And it is nice to be able to support the Fire Department.”

“This was a nice way to have fun and support the Fire Department,” said Kittery resident Jeff Gallagher, who finished in the top 10.

The Kittery Fire Department Association is separate from the municipal side of the Fire Department, according to Hale.

The Association supports the families of firefighters and gives out a scholarship each year. It helps to fund the civic side of the department, as opposed to the municipal aspect, which is supported by taxes. That is why they hold fund-raisers throughout the year to support their efforts.

“This was a great family event. We had young kids here and parents running with their children in strollers or running with their dogs, and we had people who are competitive runners,” Hale said. “It was a great event, and we really appreciate all the support from the community. I’m very happy with how it went.”

The men’s top 10 included Chamberlain, Michienzi, Mangiafico, Bill Greenier (Kittery), Jeffery Gallagher (Kittery Point), Michael Wilkins (Rochester), Chris Kemp (Kittery), Eric Laster (Kittery Point), Andrew Tenenbaum (Portland, Maine) and Paul Routhier (Dover).

The women’s top 10 included Lindquist, Jones, Richardson, Amy Costa (Kennebunk, Maine), Stefanie Langlois (South Berwick, Maine), Debra Tenenbaum (Portland), Sandy Lynch (North Hampton), Christa Desjadins (Exeter), Julie Johnson (Eliot) and Laura Weissman (Kittery).

Age group winners included Eliot’s Kaitlyn (female 1-14), Sam Fisher of Wilbraham, Mass. (male 1-14), Kittery Point’s Katlyn Lynch (female 15-19), Kittery’s Travis Jones (male 15-19), Langlois (female 20-29), Dan Darcy of Portsmouth (male 20-29), Costa (female 30-39), Gallagher (male 30-39), Eliot’s Kathleen Hebden (female 40-49), Greenier (male 40-49), Johnson (female 50-59), Craig Dickinson of Moody, Maine (male 50-59), Kittery Point’s Judith Spiller (female 60-69) and Kittery’s Duncan McEachern (male 60-69).
