Runners Write on Maine Running History fb

  • Gary Allen ~ That Michael Westphal kid in 6th ran the Boston Marathon only a week or so before, he was with Joanie in the hills and went on to run around 2:31 as I recall.
  • Michael Westphal ~ Andy Palmer also ran Boston a week and a half prior to this, finishing as the first Mainer in around 2:29. I only saw him once from a distance behind. You couldn’t miss Andy’s tall frame alongside all the shorter runners. I ended up about a minute behind him in 2:30:16- the 2nd Mainer in. He obviously showed no effects of having just run a tough marathon when he crushed that field at Old Town. I remember that this was a race that he gained a tremendous amount of respect from the top competitors in the Bangor and central Maine area.
  • John Mills ~ I see that in the results that Bill Pike placed 4th in the 14 miler on Sunday. I assume that the Pike for UM that won the 3 mile track race for UM the day before in a meet whose results are to the right of the road race results. That is impressive!
  • Michael Westphal ~ Bill Pike did win that 3 mile race the day before- two strong performances in one weekend. He was one of a number of my UMaine xc teammates in the 14 miler including Phil Garland 3rd, Joe Shultz 8th, Jonathan Howland 15th, John O’Grady 21st, Jim Newett 31st, Eric R Ellis 34th and Larry Allen 47th. My younger brother James, who was still in high school finished 42nd.
  • John Mills~Michael Westphal Thanks for the information. You and your teammates ran well that day. I was running for Brewer at that time and remember well your brother James from MDI. I and 3 of my classmates ran XC and track for UM starting in the fall of 1980. We ran with Jim Newett for a year or two. We heard about past UM runners like you and were happy to be a part of the tradition at UM.
