PHIPPSBURG — Samuel E. “Sam” Burgess Jr. passed away on Jan. 25, 2016, at his home in Sebasco Estates, Maine. He was 71 years old. Born in Bath on Oct. 5, 1944, the son of Samuel and Edith (Alexander) Burgess. He grew up in Sebasco Estates and attended Morse High School, he was a member of the class of 1963, where he was a part of the track, cross country and basketball teams which he excelled at all.

Sam was a lobsterman since childhood. He loved being on the ocean and worked hard to provide for his family. He will be sadly missed by all those who loved him.

Sam was predeceased by his parents, and a sister, Edith A. Burgess.

He leaves behind his wife Kathy; his daughter Laurie McNelly and son, Sam Burgess III; his sisters, Rose Holbrook and Estella Perkins and her husband Everett Perkins; three grandchildren, Joey Leask, Savanna Burgess and Bryce McNelly; uncles, nephews, nieces and many true friends.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Phippsburg Sportsman’s Club from 1 to 3 p.m., with food and refreshments provided.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Phippsburg Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 83, Phippsburg, ME 04562.

“Old” news”, but, one of the FEW best high school runners i competed with, before & after graduating (’59-’63)—State X-C champ, (Class L) ’60-’61-’62; 2-time Westbrook 2+ miler, Patriots Day, ’61 & ’62___2-time STATE mile & 880 champ—iconic that 2 of the 4 finalist from State X-C in ’61, have passed on—-Billy Martin and the above mentioned….U R MISSED, Sammy—
