Cross Country Takes 1st Place at Mustang Classic 5K

Auburn, ME – CMCC Cross Country got its season started the right way, with both the men’s and women’s team winning their own meet, the Mustang Classic 5K at Lost Valley Ski Resort. Eva Fleurent won the individual title for the women while the men’s team took second, third, and fourth on the podium.
“I’m extremely proud of how our men’s and women’s teams competed today,” said head coach Kevin Mitchell. “They showed toughness, discipline, and determination throughout a challenging, hilly course in wet and muddy conditions. For our first meet of the season, we established some strong early benchmarks and gained valuable race experience. This was a positive first step and we’re excited to keep building from here.”
There was light but steady rain throughout the morning in Auburn, making the course slick and muddy for runners. However, that did not dampen the enthusiasm for the runners from Central Maine, UMaine Augusta, Kennebec Valley and Washington County making their first appearances of the new season.
On the men’s side, the Mustangs took first in the team event with a trio of freshman runners nabbing spots on the podium. Riley Lamb finished second overall with a time of 19:38.8, ahead of Harper Doyle in third in 20:38.0 and Isaac Morse in fourth with a 21:35.5 race.
Fellow first-year Miguel Herrick was just outside the top five, finishing sixth in 22:45.1. Isaac Scribellito ended up in eighth with a time of 23:32.7. Sophomores Grace Golebiewski (25:08.3) and Carlos Fra-Nero (31:41.2) finished the day in 11th and 13th place respectively.
UMA’s Samuel Liudvinaitis finished first overall individually. The wet conditions did not seem to slow down the freshman who blistered through the 5K course in a time of 18:43.9! Randall Chamberlain rounded out the podium positions for Kennebec Valley with a 22:06.2 time.
In the women’s race, CMCC once again took three of the five podium places, this time sweeping the top three spots. Fleurent picked up right where she left off last season after finishing second overall at the YSCC Championships. The sophomore from Biddeford, ME finished in 25:16.4 to leave the rest of the field far behind by more than three minutes!
Fiona Landry and Lexus Keene took the second and third positions, finishing in 28:26.1 and 29:25.1 respectively. Lauren Hanlon rounded out the trio of women’s ice hockey players who are staying in shape by running cross country this fall, taking sixth in 31:08.9. She was just ahead of teammate Cassandra Pace in seventh who finished with a 31:11.6 time.
Washington County’s Tobie and Trinity Yocum took the final two spots on the podium in fourth and fifth with times of 29:40.9 and 30:46.3. UMaine Augusta had Sophia Fabrizio-Radley (33:56.6) in eighth and Sophia Dunham (35:48.6) in ninth, while Kennebec Valley’s Liam Caelus rounded out the women’s field in 11th with a time of 37:19.9.
After the races, team awards were handed out. The podium places received a laser engraved wooden medal to go along with a pumpkin and pair of fuzzy socks, while all competitors were treated to complimentary apple crisp to wrap up the morning.
Cross Country next competes at the Maine State Meet, hosted for the second straight year at Bowdoin College, on Saturday, September 19th.
