A nice day in February for a race. I drove 2 hours south to Wakefield Mass to race in Cupid’s Chase 5K. With no real races in Maine in the month of February this year I decided to take the drive. Well organized race with a flat racecourse that officially measures at 3.14 miles taking you around a small lake, slightly longer than an official 5K. The race course narrows very early in mile 1 down to a 4 foot wide walking path at the north end of the lake with a few small ice patches, nothing more than 1 or 2 strides. Apparently a little too much for one runner as they almost came to a complete stop right in front of me. I came very close to running into them and had to sidestep almost into the snow bank. A slight breeze turned into a headwind the last half mile or so. The temp was just over 30 with the windchill in mid to upper 20’s. I’ll take that for a race in February. Overall, I would take the drive to do this race again if I needed to.
I felt pretty good, but just not as fast as I’d like to be. I finished in 22:18, placing 32 out of 387 runners, and took 2nd in a very closely contested age group. They award the top 3 runners in each age group and we were all within 18 seconds of each other. My award was some Hershey kisses, a cookie, and a new pair of running gloves. The cookie has mysteriously disappeared.
My next race will be the Irish Road Rover 5K in Portland in about a month.
