Now you might not agree with the below meaning of discrimination or the categories they list. We are reporting on who the MPA tells us were the winners. We could just not post the photos of the people we know most people agree do not belong in few questionable categories but it is not our race, This might well be an act of discrimination. We might end up only reporting on the events with photos that 80% of the public agree. Or there might be many other ways to report safely with the public which is likely not to start a riot. We will try to cover all the events in the way the MPA feels is fair but they will have to be willing to work with us.
What is discrimination?
Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. That’s the simple answer. But explaining why it happens is more complicated.
The human brain naturally puts things in categories to make sense of the world. Very young children quickly learn the difference between boys and girls, (interesting example the use here, as is that not the question? Boys can be girls?) for instance. But the values we place on different categories are learned—from our parents, our peers, and the observations we make about how the world works. Often, discrimination stems from fear and misunderstanding.
Stress and health
Discrimination is a public health issue. Research has found that the experience of discrimination—when perceived as such—can lead to a cascade of stress-related emotional, physical, and behavioral changes. Stress evokes negative emotional responses, such as distress, sadness, and anger, and can often lead to an increase in behaviors that harm health, such as alcohol, tobacco, and other substance use, and a decrease in healthy activities, such as sleep and physical activity.
Discrimination can be damaging even if you haven’t been the target of overt acts of bias. Regardless of your personal experiences, it can be stressful just being a member of a group that is often discriminated against, such as racial minorities or individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
The anticipation of discrimination creates its own chronic stress. People might even avoid situations where they expect they could be treated poorly, possibly missing out on educational and job opportunities.

It was a close race last night between Finn Morris of Cape Elizabeth17:25 & Liam Nudd of Cape Elizabeth 17:27 for the Boys Race. In female race it was not even close. Soren Stack-Chessa, a former male track star of Maine Coast & still is the fastest runner in his school this year. The powerhouse “Soren” has not slowed down after moving to the girls event. The MPA did have a type of screening in place but they lifted it in April of this to help males who ID as females run as female. Not sure if Soren was forced to run as a “girl” but the door was open to make it legal. Many of the Ladies disagree this is a good idea. Soren was able finish the race more than 2 minutes faster than Emma Young of Cape Elizabeth who finished 20:15 for 2nd place & Rahel DeLaney of MAINE COAST with 20:38 took 3rd.
The photos shared here are courtesy of 5k sports. 5k sports also timed the event. If there has been any mistakes with the results we will corrected per request of the school hosting the event &/or the timing service.
