Race day #2 of the weekend. Today it was the Phil Soule Phlail 5K in Brunswick. A bit warmer today out in the open but thankfully about 70% of the course is shaded. This is a great flat trail race, although it’s not as much trail as it used to be. They’ve had to modify the course because of new athletic field construction. Last year we had to go off the trails onto some streets and then back onto the trail as well use some paved walkways. This year we’re back mostly to the old trails in reverse direction but still using many paved walkways. Last years course was short and this years was even shorter, about .06 miles shorter than last year, coming in at about 2.86 miles. This is likely the new course going forward.
Today I was tired from yesterday, but not too bad. I was able to maintain a decent pace and even had a strongish finish, although I couldn’t sprint as hard as I could have for the last 50 feet or so as there were 2 runners running side by side in the finishing shoot with no room to pass. I was able to come in with a time of 20:47, slightly faster than last year, but again, the course was slightly shorter. I placed 13th out of 84 runners, but did not place for an age group award as they only awarded 1st in each group.
My next race will be a 10K in Waterville in 2 weeks.
