I had decided to run the Epic Sport Rabbit Run four miler, since on Mother's Day I'd be running with my daughter for the one mile fun run and the 5k...I thought it would be a nice warm up. I had some friends tell me I shouldn't do two races back to back yet...especially since the Mother's Day race was the big one I was looking forward to. In the first 500 yards of the Rabbit Run, there were two beaver dams that had flooded the trail. There was no way to run around it. So, thru it I ran. By mile two I had a significant hot spot on the bottom of my foot, by mile three it hurt, and since I was only a mile from being done...I just sucked it up and finished...though it hurt a lot. As soon as I looked at my foot, I realized what a mistake I'd made. The entire bottom of my left foot was a huge blister. At first I thought I'd just ruined my chances at a PR. Then when it got to be 9pm at night and I'd consulted all the websites and friends I knew about what to do...I realized that in order to heal, I couldn't do the Mother's Day race. My daughter was horribly disappointed, and so was I. I kind of cried about it for the first part of Mother's Day. I'm still healing...I at least went for a walk yesterday and used the treadmill...but it was still very sore. I was very disappointing...but the lesson was learned: Don't do anything major the day before a race that is important to you.
Good Afternoon Athletes,
New Sport…..New Sport…
Maine Senior Games is on Facebook. This is my first attempt so it is new to me as well. One of our board members has helped me set it up and is helping me until I get used to it. Log onto www.facebook.com and set up an account for yourself – follow the directions on the screen. This is free. Once this is done enter Maine Senior Games into the search bar – then add yourself to the group. This is a place for senior athletes to chat with other senior athletes and to find out what events are going on as part of MSG. I’ll be learning right along with you!
What fun we had at Healthy Body Fit Mind (Fitness for Boomers and Seniors)!  We met other athletes, learned about Core Training, did some balancing , stretching,  and received lots of handouts! The next two weeks there will be trainers to help us who are sports conditioners!! This will be at no cost to you as they are donating their time. The dates will be Monday, 11th, 18th from 5:30-6:30. You are invited even if you missed the first one. 85 D Street in South Portland (Park at McDonalds and walk across) It is on the 2nd floor.
Food for thought: Energy drinks will give you a quick boost but not enough if you skip a meal. Be sure to eat meals to give you proper fuel for performance.
Until next week….stay well and stay fit,
Charles & Paula Sawyer met Ken Skier at the Exeter, NH race last Sunday. A friend forwarded his pictures to us. We are told he’s an interesting fellow who runs with a camera and takes shots while he runs, as well as before and after the race. Charles tells us it was a good race. Charles got under 23 again, which pleased him, and Paula got under 30 again, which pleased her as well. Three other MTC members, Dr Phil Pierce, Jerry Levasseur and Robert Randall, were among the 400 plus runners. Besides the normal post-race food, there was a wonderful Mexican buffet including a free beer. Awards included a huge sombrero and a package of stuff. The group of Maine Track Club members all recommend the race as a fun event and a good course.
