Audrey Reports on Race

2nd Annual Epic Rabbit Run 4 Miler

Bangor, ME, May 9, 2009

I ran 4 miles to help And muddy... It was wet Race #9 done!

Short Slide Show courtesy of Audrey

Runners talk about this race

You suggested I tell you about the 4 mile trail race in Augusta last Saturday.
It started on a grassy hill we ran down. It was really slippery, so I hopped more than ran. At the bottom of the hill we went across a beaver dam that was overflowing, so we all got wet feet. Then onto a nice trail that was primarily packed dirt and about 4-5 feet wide. Some people might call the course flat. I would say that much of it was winding and reasonably flat, but on the last mile or two there were short hills. The course wound around and joined again at the hill, which we had to run up for the finish. I walked more than ran as did many of the other runners, including Paula.
Prizes were two deep by ten year increments. Second place was a 15 dollar gift certificate to Eping Sports in Bangor. I think first place was 20 dollars. Water was provided but no food, which was okay with me. There was a water stop on the trail about at the 2 3/4 mile point. the group present were enthusiastic and supportive, and we plan to do the race again next year, even though our times were poor.
And still another runner says:
I had decided to run the Epic Sport Rabbit Run four miler,
since on Mother's Day I'd be running with my daughter for
the one mile fun run and the 5k...I thought it would be a
nice warm up. I had some friends tell me I shouldn't do two
races back to back yet...especially since the Mother's Day
race was the big one I was looking forward to.

In the first 500 yards of the Rabbit Run, there were two
beaver dams that had flooded the trail. There was no way to
run around it. So, thru it I ran. By mile two I had a
significant hot spot on the bottom of my foot, by mile three
it hurt, and since I was only a mile from being done...I
just sucked it up and finished...though it hurt a lot.

As soon as I looked at my foot, I realized what a mistake
I'd made. The entire bottom of my left foot was a huge
blister. At first I thought I'd just ruined my chances at a
PR. Then when it got to be 9pm at night and I'd consulted
all the websites and friends I knew about what to do...I
realized that in order to heal, I couldn't do the Mother's
Day race. My daughter was horribly disappointed, and so was
I. I kind of cried about it for the first part of Mother's
Day. I'm still healing...I at least went for a walk
yesterday and used the treadmill...but it was still very
sore.

I was very disappointing...but the lesson was learned:
Don't do anything major the day before a race that is
important to you.

Senior Games 2009

Filed under: Photos — David Colby Young @ 3:58 pm

Good Afternoon Athletes,

Another week has gone by. Time sure does fly! 85 more days until Nationals.
I participated in the MA State Games last week-end. It is so much fun to see  athletes from other states and I now pay much closer attention to how the event is run!! I figure it is “on the job training”. It also made me realize that I need to work harder to be successful and that what I thought I was doing for training just isn’t enough. Be sure you are working hard in all areas of your body and not just sport specific.
As other States in our area send me their Games info, I will put them in my emails:
Maine: August 29-Sept. 24 www.mainesrgames.org
Massachusetts: May 2-Sept. 19 www.maseniorgames.org
Rhode Island Ocean Tides Senior Games: May 29-Oct. 3 www.riotsg.org
Rhode Island State Games June 5-7 www.riseniorolympics.org
New Hampshire Granite State: May 2-July 26 www.nhseniorgames.org
If you are a Maine athlete and want to take Maine Senior Games pins to Nationals be sure and let me know and I’ll get some to your right away.

New Sport…..New Sport…

Maine Senior Games is on Facebook. This is my first attempt so it is new to me as well. One of our board members has helped me set it up and is helping me until I get used to it. Log onto www.facebook.com and set up an account for yourself – follow the directions on the screen. This is free. Once this is done enter Maine Senior Games into the search bar – then add yourself to the group.  This is a place for senior athletes to chat with other senior athletes and to find out what events are going on as part of MSG. I’ll be learning right along with you!

What fun we had at Healthy Body Fit Mind (Fitness for Boomers and Seniors)!  We met other athletes, learned about Core Training, did some balancing , stretching,  and received lots of handouts! The next two weeks there will be trainers to help us who are sports conditioners!! This will be at no cost to you as they are donating their time. The dates will be Monday, 11th, 18th from 5:30-6:30. You are invited even if you missed the first one. 85 D Street in South Portland (Park at McDonalds and walk across) It is on the 2nd floor.

Jerry LeVasseuer from Maine is now on the National Board of Directors for the Senior Games. Congratulations Jerry. We are so proud of you!!

Food for thought: Energy drinks will give you a quick boost but not enough if you skip a meal. Be sure to eat meals to give you proper fuel for performance.

Fitness Tip: Many of us train for cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength and often ignore flexibility. As we get older we tend to lose flexibility so it is important to stretch every day. Flexibility improves posture, allows for greater freedom of movement and reduces injury!

Until next week….stay well and stay fit,

Jo

MTC members run South to Margaritas 5K

Charles & Paula Sawyer met Ken Skier at the Exeter, NH race last Sunday. A friend forwarded his pictures to us. We are told he’s an interesting fellow who runs with a camera and takes shots while he runs, as well as before and after the race. Charles tells us it was a good race. Charles got under 23 again, which pleased him, and Paula got under 30 again, which pleased her as well. Three other MTC members, Dr Phil Pierce, Jerry Levasseur and Robert Randall, were among the 400 plus runners. Besides the normal post-race food, there was a wonderful Mexican buffet including a free beer. Awards included a huge sombrero and a package of stuff. The group of Maine Track Club members all recommend the race as a fun event and a good course.

Photos from the Maragaritas 5K–part of the “Will Run for Beer” road race series sponsored by Locorunning. A great, rolling course (with no serious climbs or descents–just enough grade to keep it interesting)….followed by the BEST post-race food and ambience I have experienced in well over a hundred races in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. A FANTASTIC experience.  I suggest you click on “Play Slideshow” below, for the full experience.
