Paula Sawyer share a few photos and gives her “Sawyer Report”
Paula & Charlie Sawyer did the Biddeford Muscular Dystrophy 5K race on Labor Day. Paula Sawyer states: “This was the first Muscular Dystrophy race they have done. It was well attended and very well organized. The awards went three deep in 5 year increments. Prizes were well-designed, unique medals. At least 300 + runners were in attendance. The race began at the YMCA in Biddeford. It wasn’t flat as described but was quite challenging with at least four good hills well placed. Timing was well done and results were posted in a timely manner. Food was delicious. There were great pastries, blueberry bagels, apples, hot coffee with cream, a variety of donuts, locally made blueberry and strawberry sodas made by a Maine beer company and Propel power drinks. Two teen-age brothers who both have muscular dystrophy and who attend the Biddeford school were in attendance and supported the runners. Two high school cross-country teams, the Biddeford High School track team, and the Kennebunk school track team, also participated and ran in their uniforms. Biddeford’s running team beat Kennebunk’s team. Many Maine track club members volunteered and worked the race ( including Bob Randall and Margaritt McNulty) You will see others in the photos I don’t know who also other volunteered or ran the race. “
Courtesy of Mary Ann Tardif, my sister, we have some photos of past years. We have found some past year photos. We will look for more.
We hope we will be sent photos of this years event and/or may link to some photos for 2009.
In all the races the athletes worked together, running in tightly formed packs throughout each of the individual races. In the girls JV race, Evelyn Swann was inspiring as she gritted out the challenging course, in her first ever cross country race. Lucy Soucek had a wonderful finishing sprint. Caroline Driscoll finished strong, 4th overall. Rebecca Planchart also had a solid race finishing 5th. Alicia Wilson showed determination and mental toughness.
In the boys JV race, Seamus O’Brien showed much improvement and strength as compared to last year. Matt Jardine and Ethan Craigo were solid throughout. Ethan Had a fabulous last mile, moving up significantly to finish in a strong time.
In the girls Varsity race, the girls stuck together. They all showed both mental and physical strength and intelligence. They each were solid throughout the race, and moved nicely up the field as the race progressed. In the Boys varsity race, the boys also stuck together. They finished a strong 5th overall, out of 10 teams, a better standing than anticipated. William Fletcher had an excellent finish, passing numbers of runners in the last 600 meters. The boys team looked strong and shows much promise for the remainder of the season.
