FRIENDSHIP — A veteran, consistently top-placing local road racer and one of the state’s recent fastest high school sprinters battled to the end of the 3.1-mile Friendship Days Long Haul (5-kilometer) Road Race Saturday morning, July 27, with the older runner nipping the youngster in the final stretch.
Midcoast residents Darren Winchenbach, 32, outdistanced Jonathan Hendrickson-Belloguet, 18, to finish first overall in the 20th annual event, which included a 3.1-mile race referred to as the “Long Haul” and an 800-meter children’s fun run called the “Short Haul.”
The children’s fun run typically is a mile, but a miscommunication saw the runners cut the course short, turning it into an 800-meter run.
The event is part of the Friendship Days’ celebration.

Winchenbach finished the course in 19 minutes and 18 seconds and Hendrickson-Belloguet, who graduated from Medomak Valley High School in June, three seconds behind in 19:21.
The win marked Winchenbach’s sixth road race victory of the summer season, including first places at the Run-A-Hound 5K April 20 in Rockland (19:29), the Mother’s Day 5K May 12 in Rockland (20:21), the Run for the Money 5K May 26 in Lincolnville (19:38), the Brandon Feyler 5K June 29 in Waldoboro (19:20) and the Blackjack 5K July 11 in Sabattus (23:12).
“[The] Friendship Day 5K was the smallest margin of victory I’ve ever had,” Winchenbach said. “It was the hardest victory I’ve ever earned and I can confidently say it’s the greatest victory. The harder I have to work to get what I want, the more I appreciate what I have.”
A 1999 MVHS graduate, Winchenbach did a multitude of sports through his sophomore to senior year, including cross county, baseball, wrestling and track, with cross country being his favorite.
“I was horrible my first year [of high school] as a cross-county runner as I finished last for the team every single meet,” he said. “I can even remember getting lapped by some of the girls in track workouts my first year running.”
Winchenbach credits his 5K road race success to a combination of the Vi-Shape nutritional shake mix he has been drinking, a New Year’s resolution of no drinking alcohol, healthier eating habits, more mental toughness and “a little luck at choosing the right races to run.”
“I’ve always wanted to be successful with my running,” he said. “It just took 17 years to finally have it happen.”
Barbara Daggett, 43, finished first for women in 22:18.9, and 13th overall. She also finished first among women in the Marshall Point Lighthouse Loop 5K the week before in Tenants Harbor.
There were 77 runners/walkers overall in the Friendship Days event.
The top men’s age-group finishers were: Jonathan Hendrickson-Belloguet, Joe Winter and Luke Flood for those 25 and younger; Darren Winchenbach, Matt Taylor and Peter Harper, ages 26-40; and John Harper, Ron Haney and Steve Cartwright, ages 41 and older.
The top women’s age-group finishers were: Heather Douglas, Miranda TranNgoc and Celeste Gomez for those 25 and younger; Suzanne Allyn, Amanda Boetsch and Anna Winter, ages 26-40; Barbara Daggett, Patricia Leach and Toni Call, ages 41 and older.
The 5K course records were set by Michael Bunker for men (15:46.6 in 2010) and Anna M. Grise for women (18:28.8 in 1996).
Luke Stang, 11, of River Falls, Wis won the children’s fun run with a time of 3:25. Finishing times for the other 15 runners were not tabulated. It is the second straight year Stang won the race.
