Well, I never thought I’d be able to say that I beat Joan Benoit Samuelson in a race, but after today, I can say just that. Yup, today was race day. This morning, I was in Brunswick for the Phil Soule Phlail 5K. I’ve done this race 10 years in a row. Well, 10 out of 11 years as it did not take place in the covid year of 2020. It’s always one of my favorites. It was a bit warm for early October at about 70 degrees at race time. I definitely felt it. This race is advertised as a 5K but the new revised racecourse is a bit short of 5K, but for the first time in a few years, it was the same course as last year.
Today I felt good despite the heat and actually beat last years’ time by 2 seconds. I’ll take it. I finished in 20:45, placing 10th out of 89 runners, took 1st place in my age group, and as mentioned above, I beat Joan Benoit Samuelson by 22 seconds. Yes, she’s significantly older than me, but she was an Olympic athlete.
My next planned race isn’t until the end of the month which will be The Great Pumpkin 10K in Saco.
I can never find the online results for this race as they are buried somewhere deep inside Bowdoin’s website. I did find last years’ results today, but couldn’t find them last year. The results are in the pictures and are in order even though they are not numbered. The pictures do overlap slightly. You may have to zoom in to read the names.
