22 July 1950 Maine AAU Marathon in Presque Isle
In January 1949, Henry H. Franklin of the Maine Amateur Athletic Union recruited Maine running legend Ed Shepard of Gorham to promote distance running in Maine. Ed was appointed to the AAU Long Distance Running national committee, and was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Maine AAU. Ed was instrumental in staging the Maine AAU Marathon in Presque Isle on July 22, 1950, the state’s first full 26.2-mile race, as well as numerous other road races, including the Thomaston 15K, which he won three years in a row. Here he is shown with members of the Maine Amateur Athletics Union Outstanding Athlete of 1950 Committee. Photo courtesy of Ron Shepard.
