  • Rockland — It turns out Ryan Howes and Jala Tooley have no need for being “lucky” because they consistently train hard, put in the mileage to maintain a high level of long-distance skill and, in the end, are really good at running.

The duo finished one-two in the Trackside Station “Lucky Leprechaun” 5-kilometer road race/walk on Saturday morning, March 18.

In a field of 52 runners/walkers, as well as a handful of supporters, on a cold, crisp pre-spring morning, Howes finished first overall in 18:08.5, while Tooley was second, and the first female finisher, in 20:58.

Runners and walkers dressed to protect themselves against the cold of the day, but also, plenty of green and Saint Patrick’s Day colors could be seen. That holiday was celebrated the day before, on Friday, March 17.

Frozen, packed snow, from last week’s late-winter blizzard, lined much of the course, that wound its way around much of the south end of the city and the industrial park area.

The annual 3.1-mile event took place at Trackside Station, 4 Union St.

The event was part of the local holiday 5K race series and organized by the non-profit One Community Many Voices.

One Community Many Voices, OCMV, based in the Midcoast, is a scholarship program to give people in need a “hand up,” instead of a “hand out.” The race is being run in collaboration with the non-profit Go! Malawi, who has organized the race series in the past.

The Trackside Station “Lucky Leprechaun” 5K race was one of six holiday 5Ks (3.1-mile races) the non-profit organizes.

Other remaining 2017 races include The First National Bank “Summer Solstice” 5K in June, Horch Roofing Labor Day 5K in September and the Trackside Station “Scare Me” 5K in October.

    The individual “Lucky Leprechaun” results, with place, name and time for each participant listed, included: 1, Howes, 18:08.5; 2, Tooley, 20:58; 3, Rick Reardon, 21:19.2; 4, Jacob Chamberlain, 21:52.4; 5, Randy Whitmore, 22:12.4; 6, Kathryn Daggett, 22:55.8; 7, Matthew Booth, 24:14.6; 8, Hannah Raymond, 24:58; 9, Amy Nyberg, 25:01.0; 10, Kristy Hastings, 25:08.6; 11, Mary Smith, 25:22.3; 12, Joyce Reardon, 25:27.9; 13, Kevin Conley, 26:48.1; 14, John Clifford, 28:29.9; 15, David Stanhope, 28:57.7; 16, Alan Reynolds, 29:13.6; 17, Michael Madell, 29:24.5; 18, Abigail Matlack, 29:31.5; 19, Jody Dinsmore, 29:32.5; 20, Amanda Overlock, 29:37.3; 21, Michele Wagstaff, 30:18.5; 22, Kirk Langford, 30:53.9; 23, Kenneth Corson, 30:55.3; 24, Art Warren, 30:56.9; 25, Catherine Corson, 31:02.6; 26, Kimberly Collins, 31:20.0; 27, Alyssa Rolerson, 31:32.2; 28, Steve Arsenault, 31:33.9; 29, Megan Stilwell, 31:34.8; 30, Kristin Brown, 33:44.7; 31, Callie Davisson, 33:49.3; 32, Tania Allen, 34:22.7; 33, Laura Reynolds, 34:38.1; 34, Ellen Spring, 34:58.7; 35, Alyssa Pratt, 35:30; 36, Kathryn Mattock, 36:46.3; 37, Sarah Emmons, 37:06.1; 38, Paul McFarland, 37:37.4; 39, Samuel Olson, 37:52.5; 40, Karen Girard, 39:15.6; 41, Bradley Overlock, 41:47.6; 42, Joe Overlock, 41:53.5; 43, Anderson Richter, 45:58.2; 44, Keura Pearson, 50:33.9; 45, Amber Silverman, 50:36.6; 46, Michael Wall, 50:43.0; 47, Michelle Silvermane, 50:44.6; 48, Christopher Schiessl, 50:59.3; 49, Karen Donovan, 50:59.9; 50, Crystal Brenner, 51:04.6; 51 April Benedix, 51:05.6; and 52, Michelle Chamberlain, 52:19.7.
