Paula Sawyer share a few photos and gives her “Sawyer Report”
Paula & Charlie Sawyer did the Biddeford Muscular Dystrophy 5K race on Labor Day. Paula Sawyer states: “This was the first Muscular Dystrophy race they have done. It was well attended and very well organized. The awards went three deep in 5 year increments. Prizes were well-designed, unique medals. At least 300 + runners were in attendance. The race began at the YMCA in Biddeford. It wasn’t flat as described but was quite challenging with at least four good hills well placed. Timing was well done and results were posted in a timely manner. Food was delicious. There were great pastries, blueberry bagels, apples, hot coffee with cream, a variety of donuts, locally made blueberry and strawberry sodas made by a Maine beer company and Propel power drinks. Two teen-age brothers who both have muscular dystrophy and who attend the Biddeford school were in attendance and supported the runners. Two high school cross-country teams, the Biddeford High School track team, and the Kennebunk school track team, also participated and ran in their uniforms. Biddeford’s running team beat Kennebunk’s team. Many Maine track club members volunteered and worked the race ( including Bob Randall and Margaritt McNulty) You will see others in the photos I don’t know who also other volunteered or ran the race. “
The origins of the race are said to have been in a challenge in Doc’s Tavern leading to the first race in 1981 and was held yearly through 2000 when it was suspended for a year in 2001. The race was originally the Doc’s Tavern Three Miler Road Race.
In 2002 the race returned as Doc’s Tiger 3-Miler Road Race, benefiting the Biddeford High School Girls and Boys Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Teams.
