| Location: Alfond Youth Center, Waterville Contact: Amber Desrosiers at 207-873-0684 |
The Sawyers went to Waterville, Maine on 09-12-2009, The follow is their report of the event:
“The weather held out well for the entire week-end in Maine (in the 70–80’s). We kept busy by heading down the road to Waterville on Saturday morning to run the Doc and Mardie 5K race which started at the Alfond Center/ Waterville Youth Recreational center. The race made its way up a very steep hill to Colby College and then came back down the other side returning to the start. There were a total of five hills in this race. The coordinator, Amber Desrosiers, who has done this race for several years in a row also has worked as the director of the Waterville rec center, recently earned her Masters Degree in the physical fitness field. Amber is now a new employ of Central Maine Medical Center of Lewiston-Auburn. She is in transition so coordination of the Doc and Mardie was more of a challenge for her and others this year. She held the 5K race one last time and did so because Mardie, the wife of the couple for whom the race is dedicated, passed away this spring at age 97. The race was well-attended with quite a few veteran and senior runners in attendance. After the race, there wasn’t an awards ceremony as had been organized in the past but Amber did click off our final times and presented each of us with artistically-designed certificates. We were happy to have run this race once again. The course albeit demanding and unforgiving has to be one of the most beautiful courses I have run in Maine and climbs up to the summit of the Colby College campus and then descends back down the other side of the campus, past the football field, past the college cross-country trail and alongside the most beautiful homes of Waterville. We fear that the Doc and Mardie 5K will in the future not be pulled together as well since Amber is no longer the coordinator or the “Doc and Mardie 5K” may just never be held again in the years to come.
Charlie ran in the 23 minute area and I ran 30.18. I wanted to take photos at the awards ceremony, Dave, but Amber didn’t host an awards ceremony this year primarily because a children’s athletic event was being held at the Alfond Rec. Center after the race. If you ever get a chance to come through Waterville, you should check out this amazing recreational center which was funded by a generous donation given by Mr. Alfond. When the Alfond Center opened it doors to the youth of Waterville, General Colin Powell was the honored guest and speaker in attendance and some of his speech is inscribed on the walls of the lobby. This recreational center has a full-length racer/swimmers’ pool and both the youth of Waterville and the Colby College students have access to this pool.
For results of this race, you may have to e-mail Amber Desrosiers. I have yet to find the results on line.
