4th Annual Dick Deery Run/Walk for MSA, Lakeside Park

The Sawyer Report 2009

Monday Afternoon, May 25th, Memorial DayDear Readers of Maine Running Photos,I took lots of photos of the area and the event yesterday, the 3.5 mile run at Rangeley to benefit Parkinson’s Disease Research. The Dick Deery Family in Rangeley as well as the Michael J Fox Foundation were co-sponsors and this is their 3rd annual Dick Derry Run/Walk. Dick Deery struggled with the illness and died, the Deery family searched for something they could do for their Dad and they found the MIchael J.Fox Foundation for Parkison’s Research. The Deery family joined Team Fox and got advise on how to proceed. Team Fox regularly sent to the Deery family updates on progress in finding a cure for Parkinson’s Disease and also the foundation shared with the Deery family what other Team Fox members throughout the U.S. have been doing to raise money and to make a difference in the lives of those with Parkinson’s Disease. The race was challenging and ran down Main Street, then turned on Depot where we ran a good two miles on a stone/pebbled road. This slowed us up considerably. There were mile markers at every mile and at the 2 mile mark, that is, at the end of the pebble road, we found a water stop. Then we turned left on Route 16 and ran another good mile on the highway or sidewalk. There were several hills on Route 16 and there was one grind of a hill on Main Street after the start of the race. At the 3mile mark, where we turned left off of Route 16, we descended down a hill back on to the Main Street area. That certainly helped some runners make up some time before they approached the finish line in the park across from the Chamber of Commerce. There were some good times documented and Steve Russell can probably get you the results, Dave. Charlie got first in his age and I placed second or third. ( A woman in my age category ran about a minute ahead of me. I finished in 35.41 and Charlie finished in 27 minutes and something.

The venue was absolutely breathtaking.

The course was challenging.

There were great silent auction items. Charlie bid on a $400.00 2 night get-away at a cottage on Rangeley and was the highest bidder paying $150.00. We will be staying there in September during foliage season!

There were no snacks or foods after the race…only bottled water.

Runners were encouraged to hit the restaurant /pub next door and partake of lunch and beverages and beer!

There were many walkers and many runners who participated.

There were prizes in every age category and they only went one deep.

There was a Memorial Day Parade and ceremony in downtown Rangeley at noon and the race began at 2:30.

Registration took place indoors at the Chamber of Commerce building. T-shirts were given to registrants and the fee was $15.00 for registration.

Hope this information all will enjoy the photos.

Runners Talk about this event

As you might guess, this race is all about firemen. Prizes go heavy that way, which is fine, and the early-entry t shirts noted nothing about a race, even though they are noce material. They have the firemen’s logo on the front and the sponsors on the back. Age category prizes were gift certificates (mine was a $15. to Runners’ Alley; Paula got a $5. to some hardware off Rt. 1N). Categories included 60-69 and 70 and over because I complained and someone else did too because it was 50 and above last year. Race winners and firemen winners got huge trophies and a gift certificate. Food was good and ample with fruit, huge cookies, brownies, crackers, sport drinks AND COFFEE (one I always appreciate, especially on cold, rainy days). How-some-ever, we chose this race because the brochure said it was “Flat and fast,” which was totally inaccurate. Bob Randall and I agreed it was much hillier than the Portland Seadog course, painfully so. A more accurate description would be, “challenging, ” since there were about five pretty nasty hills and several grades in theout and back (with a loop at the middle) course totally on pavement. The starting command was startling; people were chatting when this guy up front said, “Okay, GO.” I don’t see this as a race that will get a lot better, given that there really isn’t anything special, as far as we were concerned and the managers are not runners. I give them credit for responding positively to my criticism regarding age divisions and a passing grade for post-race food. We probably won’t do it again. c
